The Canadian government must act now to stop encouraging the oil and gas industry with billions of dollars of subsidies. Équiterre's latest report, "Risking it All", reveals that Export Development Canada provides on average more than $10 billion per year of support to oil and gas companies - twelve times more than for clean technologies.
This massive support for the oil and gas industry is wholly incompatible with Canada’s climate change commitments under the Paris Agreement and is at odds with the green and sustainable future that Canadians are demanding.
The federal government has committed to withdrawing from these subsidies by 2025, but this timeline is too long. We want fossil fuel subsidies to be eliminated by 2020.
The funds that are being used as subsidies would be put to better use if invested in initiatives for the climate, healthcare, education or any other initiative to improve the lives of Canadians.

I want Canada to take action now to end fossil fuel subsidies. Giving subsidies to oil, gas and coal companies seriously undermines your government’s carbon reduction goals and the climate actions you have committed to.
The goals of the Paris Agreement on climate change must be reached. The promise made to the Canadian people and the international community to eliminate fossil fuel subsidies must be kept. Canada must start now with a commitment to get rid of fossil fuel subsidies by 2020.
It’s time for Canada to show global climate leadership. Stop giving billions in public money to the companies that are causing climate change.
